“The Blade Runner soundtrack had the most memorable impact because I was watching the best film ever made along with it.” Tim Bernhardt talks us through his formative musical moments, from Vangelis to Kings Of Convenience.

What’s the first record you ever bought?

This song made it to number two in Germany. I don’t remember what number one was, but it probably didn’t matter. Everybody was close to blowing their speakers with the kick drum. It was basically the first real track I’d ever really heard. The cover of the record was a floppy disk. A total must-have at the time and I think that never really changed.

The first time you remember hearing electronic music?

Vangelis’s Blade Runner soundtrack. I’m pretty sure I had heard electronic music before – after all, Dark Side Of The Moon had been around for ten or so years – but this one had the most memorable impact because I was watching the best film ever made along with it.

The guilty pleasure?

I know. But this one’s actually pretty good. Really. I love the bassline, obviously, and the weird chord change after the chorus is quite a bold move for such a pop song.

The best chillout record?

That’s the kind of laid-back, cool music I love. Apart from the main single ‘Sexy Boy’, it’s all super chill. It never becomes random though. Everything is strictly on point. Totally justified putting Air on the map.

The record everyone loves but you hate?

Yeah, sorry. Probably a floor-filler somewhere, but a good reason to leave in my books.

The soundtrack to a lazy Sunday afternoon?

Kings Of Convenience – Riot On An Empty Street. This album is so warm and cozy, it makes you want to pull up your feet, sit on the window ledge and do absolutely nothing but be happy that you have a place in this world.

The record you are proudest of?

Panorama Pacifico [released in 2016]. I’d released three albums as part of the deep house act Lorenzo in the late 90s and early 2000s but this is the first album I’ve produced and written all by myself – with the addition of all those great vocalists. It’s on double vinyl. So yeah, that makes me a bit proud.
