OA Labs has released OA-Phosphor-1, a free virtual analog synth for macOS, built around a simple idea: controllable instability.
OA Labs says Phosphor-1 is a precise, capable analog synth that stays clean and musical when you want it to, and comes apart in characterful ways when you push it.
At the heart of it is AGE, a master control that ages the whole instrument at once. Turn it up and pitch, filter, level and shape begin to drift, wander and sag together, with a chaos engine adding turbulent, evolving motion on top. Keep it low and the synth is pristine and exact. The instability is the character; the control is what makes it an instrument.
Under the hood:
- Two oscillators plus sub, with a morphing multimode filter (low-pass, notch, band-pass, high-pass on one control).
- AGE master instability, with independent drift across filter, unison, sub and LFOs.
- A chaos engine for generative, non-repeating movement.
- A generative arpeggiator with groove and per-step control.
- 68 presets, and a built-in help mode.
OA-Phosphor-1 is free and is available for macOS in VST3 and AU plugin formats. It’s an early release and actively evolving, with more to come from OA Labs.
