Fracture Sounds has released Alternative Woodwind Soloists, a Kontakt Player library focused on the rarely used members of the orchestral woodwind family. It is positioned as an alternative to the company’s earlier Emotive Woodwind Soloists.
The library centres on breathy, airy instruments and introduces the alto flute, bass flute, bass clarinet and tenor recorder to the soloist range. Together they span the baroque and romantic periods and are often missed in larger orchestral libraries. They can be used for authentic period-style writing or reimagined in a modern score.
Key Features:
- Solo alto flute, bass flute, bass clarinet and tenor recorder, plus a combined ensemble patch.
- Deeply sampled legato for each instrument, with same-note round robins, tongue entries at higher velocities, and a momentary keyswitch for a softer attack or release.
- Smart Legato and Smart Trills programming.
- Instrument Placement: position each instrument in any of 15 spots in the room to build your own soloist ensembles.
- Four production-ready mic mixes: close, mid, far and centre stereo.
- NKS compatible.

Free updates to existing libraries
Alongside the release, Fracture Sounds is rolling out major updates to two earlier soloist libraries:
- Emotive Woodwind Soloists gains an all-new piccolo patch built from new recordings. It has the full articulation set to match the rest of the library, including true legato.
- Soft String Soloists has had its main patches reworked to include pizzicato and staccato articulations, with swells moved to new Additional Articulations patches. This changes the articulation layout, so existing projects using Soft String Soloists may need updating.
