WireGrind has released TapSkip 2, a VST3 plug-in effect for augmenting musical rhythms.
The effect generates rhythmically structured patterns and applies them to the input audio. Patterns are built from irregular, tempo-synced delay taps, producing non-repetitive texture while maintaining alignment with the project’s rhythm. New patterns can be auto-generated with a single click, and there’s also an option to edit them manually.
Each pattern contains two sub-patterns: a timing pattern and a loudness pattern. Version 2 adds pattern customization and two additional note types for timing settings:
- Timing Patterns: TapSkip is named after two of its parameters: Taps, which is the number of regular delay taps, and Skips, which is the number of delay taps that have been made silent. The Taps and Skips are arranged in a tempo-synced sequence, and new timing patterns are generated by shuffling that sequence.
- Loudness Patterns: Tap levels are arranged non‑sequentially, meaning any tap may be louder or softer than the previous one. New loudness patterns are generated by shuffling the order of these levels, and even minor changes can strongly affect the overall rhythmic texture.
- Customizable Patterns: Both the timing sequence and the loudness levels can be edited manually.
- Five Note Types: TapSkip includes five different note types for tempo-synced parameters: singlet, duplet, triplet, quadruplet, and quintuplet. Delay and predelay times are then set as multiples of a 1/16th note where the 1/16th note is one of the five listed types. Quadruplet and quintuplet note types are rare in tempo-synced effects and provide useful alternatives to the more common singlet, duplet, and triplet (i.e. straight, dotted, and triplet).
