TouchMachines has released Terrarium, a generative world synthesizer for Windows and macOS, and Terrarium Machine, the same instrument for iPhone and iPad.
Terrarium is a small world that never stops sounding. Wind, rain, insects, water and a distant road all play in key, and the world is drawn scrolling toward you a few seconds ahead of the sound, so you see a raindrop before you hear it land. Nothing loops; it generates itself from a seed. You play it by grabbing the weather: drag the day toward dusk, fling a storm, hold the whole world’s breath, or poke the rain, the bugs and the road directly.
Features:
- 5 living layers (wind, rain, insects, water, road), 6 worlds and 36 presets.
- Six worlds move the same weather underwater, underground, indoors by the fire, out on the ice or through a radio, so one squall becomes a surge, a draught, a blaze, a gale or a burst of static.
- 16 scales with key changes that land on the bar, and eleven tuning systems including maqam and just intonation.
- CLIMATE: one control calms the whole world or makes it wild.
- MIDI and OSC out: rain, bugs, water and road arrive as MIDI notes out of the box, and any part of the weather can be wired to a CC or an OSC address, even sent a few seconds early so a light rig flashes before the thunder.
- Follows host tempo and transport.
