Born in London in May 1992, Sam Smith began singing at a young age. He first hit the charts as the featured singer on 2012’s “Latch”, and published his first single, “Lay Me Down,” shortly after. Smith released “In the Lonely Hour” in 2014, his heartfelt debut album. It featured the hit “Stay With Me,” a radio hit for the whole year. Sam Smith won four Grammy awards for his work on “In the Lonely Hour”, among them Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
His first moment in the limelight would come when he released his 2012 song “Latch,” to which Smith lent his vocals. The track highlighted the singer’s melodic falsetto. “Latch,” showcasing a stripped-down sound that made the audience member take notice of his vocal work, echoed in a great way with fans and set the foundation for their future success in the UK and beyond. Smith was just 21 when “Latch” reached the top of the UK singles chart. He soon released his single, “Lay Me Down.”
The star’s next hit was again through a featured role on another performer’s song: Naughty Boy’s Bollywood-inspired “La La La.” The song became an instant No. 1 single in the UK in 2013 with Smith’s lead vocal. Sam Smith released his first EP, “Nirvana”, on which listeners were treated to an acoustic version of “Latch.” After a few months, he was again at the top of the UK singles chart with “Money on My Mind.” His full-length debut, “In the Lonely Hour,” was released in May 2014 in the UK.
When “In the Lonely Hour” was released, Smith told the world that he was in love. He also stated that despite the album being full of love songs, he has never experienced it before. “I’ve never been in a relationship before,” he said to the magazine Fader. Smith had the chance to perform in some very exciting, rewarding arenas. He took four awards at the 2015 Grammy Awards: Song of the Year (“Stay With Me”), Record of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album and Best New Artist.
“Before I made this record I was doing everything to try and get my music heard,” Smith said during one of his four acceptance speeches. “It was only until I started to be myself that the music started to flow, and people started to listen.”
More Disclosure & second album
In 2015, Smith continued to keep busy. He released a re-recorded version of “Lay Me Down” as a duet with soul singer John Legend. It was a successful track which went to No. 1 in the UK pop charts. He also raised money for Comic Relief. The singer then supported lead vocals on “Omen,” one of the first records from Disclosure’s album, “Caracal”.
Sam Smith launched the first track, “Too Good at Goodbyes,” from his album The Thrill of It all in September 2017. He then produced three more singles from the album, which hit No. 1 in the UK and the U.S. The singer enjoyed more commercial success through his collaborations with Normani on “Dancing with a Stranger” and Calvin Harris on “Promises”.
