Stagecraft Software has announced Cenere, a subtractive synth that combines the character of vintage synths with the power of modern wavetables. They say:
We made this plugin because soft synths often struggle to capture the true, unpredictable “life” of vintage hardware. In a way, they’re too precise. That informed one of the biggest architectural decisions of this synth: the Unison Engine, which allows each voice to have its own subtle, independent movement. This creates a thick, shifting sound bed that feels organic before it even hits the filter stage.
Cenere also has a state variable filter capable of audio-rate modulation and continuous morphing. Taking a massively detuned, drifting unison patch and violently sweeping a morphing filter at audio rates usually causes digital engines to fall apart, choke the CPU, or alias into a harsh mess. Cenere handles these per-sample coefficient updates effortlessly.
The result? Tearing, vocal-like formants, and brutal, ripping textures that remain stable and rich. This synth can serve as a hoover, EP, organ, and more.
