SampleRoll releases “shft.” – rhythmic multi-effect for transforming loops and sounds (VST3 & AU)

SampleRoll has released shft., a rhythmic multi-effect plugin designed to turn static loops, drums, melodies and other audio into evolving rhythmic ideas.

shft. is designed to sit somewhere between a rhythmic sequencer, multi-band processor and creative multi-effect, allowing producers to dramatically reshape incoming audio while keeping the workflow immediate and playable.

From subtle groove changes to completely deconstructing a loop across three frequency bands, shft. is built around quickly discovering variations that would otherwise take considerably more routing and automation to create.

At the center of shft. is a 16-step sequencer that lets producers draw rhythmic shapes directly into each step, then combine them with beat repeats, reverses, granular processing, modulation and creative effects.

One of shft.’s key features is its 3-band multiband mode. Incoming audio can be split into low, mid and high frequency bands, with each band running its own independent rhythmic pattern. This makes it possible to create movement that would normally require several tracks and effect chains—for example, keeping the low end steady while chopping the mids into a syncopated pattern and letting the highs pulse at an entirely different rhythm.

Each sequencer step can use envelope shapes including Swell, Pluck, Pulse, Ramp and Triangle, with additional control over swing and ratcheting. Individual steps can also trigger forward or reverse beat repeats and granular processing, with controls for pitch, scatter and grain size.

shft. also includes a Chaos control for quickly generating new rhythmic variations, including changes to step modes, ratchets and octave movement.

Beyond the sequencer, shft. includes a collection of effects designed for further sound transformation. These include a multiband upward/downward compressor inspired by OTT-style processing, saturation, filtering, reverb and a frequency-shifted delay capable of creating delays that continuously move upward or downward in pitch as they repeat.

The frequency-shifted delay can range from subtle motion and width to metallic, spiraling and increasingly unusual feedback textures.
