PhotonDSP has released TapeEngine, a free tape simulation plugin for Windows that combines 20 individually adjustable tape-processing modules with a separate Tape Dynamics section, covering tonal coloration, transport instability, stereo imperfections, damage and noise.
Tape Processing
The tone section provides separate Saturation, Asymmetry, HF Cut and Head Bump controls. Wow, Flutter, Drift and Chew address different kinds of tape movement, from slow pitch wobble and rapid fluctuations to irregular wandering and short bends associated with damaged tape.
Stereo and damage tools include L/R Skew, Crosstalk, Asperity, Dropouts and Jam/Sag. Post Print adds a quieter, filtered imprint of earlier audio to approximate magnetic transfer between tape layers. Six noise controls distinguish signal-dependent grain from background hiss, mechanical rumble, electrical hum and buzz, and intermittent crackle.
A separate Tape Dynamics option combines soft-knee compression and dynamic treble softening with automatic level matching and output peak protection.
Character Control
The cassette-shaped Tape Character slider adjusts the twenty modules together, progressing through Premium, Ordinary, Worn Out and Broken conditions to deliberately extreme effects. According to PhotonDSP, this progression uses engineering-informed calibration.
Every module remains individually adjustable, allowing users to combine tape coloration, movement and damage independently. Factory presets provide starting points, and custom combinations can be saved as user presets.
Price & Availability
TapeEngine is free, with all modules and factory presets included. It is available for Windows 10 or later (64-bit) in VST3 format.
