FRCTL Audio has released GRNi, a granular sampler built on the engine of its GRN effect.
Here’s what they say:
Drop an audio file on the waveform, select a slice, and play it over MIDI. Every note you hold grows its own cloud of grains from that slice.
A sampler plays the same slice for every note in a chord. GRNi gives each held note its own window into the selection, spaced by the interval between the notes, so a four-note chord reads four places in the recording at once. Density is per voice, from a pool of 64 grains.
Two sample layers. Load a second file into layer B and BLEND picks, grain by grain, which layer each new grain comes from. Each layer has its own selection, level, pan and tune, and holds 60 seconds of audio at 48 kHz (30 seconds at 96 kHz). Files come in from disk, or on Windows straight out of Splice and the Ableton browser.
SCALE mode quantizes the pitch knob and the per-grain pitch jitter to one of ten scales, so scattered grains land in key. It is on by default.
Voicing is mono, legato or poly with up to 16 voices, per-note ADSR and velocity, and portamento with a curve control. A playable keyboard sits on the interface. On an MPE controller each finger bends its own note, pressure sets that note’s level, and slide moves its read position through the sample.
Also in 1.0.0:
- 3 LFOs, 3 envelopes, 4 macros with an XY pad, and the note envelope, all drag-and-drop.
- A step sequencer for rhythmic grain patterns.
- A 10-slot reorderable FX rack, a resonant filter and a feedback path.
- 52 presets in 7 categories. Presets never touch the loaded sample or selection.
- A buffer library, A/B compare, undo and redo, and a resizable interface.
GRNi and GRN share an engine but are separate products with separate serials: GRN granulates the audio on a track, GRNi granulates a sample it loads.
Pricing & Availability
GRNi is available in VST3, AU, CLAP and standalone formats on Windows, macOS (Universal Binary) and Linux for $34.99 until September 19 (Reg. $44.99).
