Audio Brewers has announced ab Recorder, an iOS application designed for recording 1st-Order Ambisonics and video using supported iPhone devices (16Pro/Pro Max and above). The app combines spatial audio capture with integrated video recording, offering a portable solution for immersive audio production.
The application records lossless 1st-Order Ambisonics at up to 32-bit float, 48 kHz, preserving the full soundfield for later decoding to a variety of playback formats, including stereo, binaural, surround, Dolby Atmos, and custom speaker layouts.
In addition to audio recording, ab Recorder supports video capture at up to 4K resolution and 60 frames per second. It can also record simultaneously from both the front and rear cameras on compatible devices, allowing users to document multiple perspectives while maintaining synchronized Ambisonics audio.
To ensure consistency between image and sound, the app automatically aligns the recorded soundfield with the selected camera and device orientation. This applies whether recording in portrait or landscape mode, or when switching between the front and rear cameras. Camera zoom functions remain available without affecting the captured Ambisonics signal.
The application also includes optional GPS tagging, allowing location metadata to be embedded directly into both audio and video recordings for easier cataloging and asset management.
By using the microphones already built into supported iPhone models, ab Recorder reduces the need to carry dedicated recording hardware for many field recording applications. The resulting files are compatible with Audio Brewers’ software as well as other professional Ambisonics workflows.
