Sonora Cinematic has announced the release of Panorama Whitekirk, the follow-up to the developer’s Panorama Guitars Kontakt Player library – this time recorded inside a medieval church with an interesting acoustic twist.

Nestled amid the Scottish countryside, in the small village of Whitekirk, stands the historic St Mary’s church. Step into this almost 900-year-old building, and you experience a room sound that is warm and tight courtesy of the striking curved wooden ceiling. Continue towards the oldest part of the church with its dense stone walls and ceiling, and the acoustics shift, becoming huge and completely organic. This is where the idea for Panorama Whitekirk was born.
Featuring two guitars: an electric and a semi-hollow, captured in a stereo setup through two guitar amps and a massive pedalboard loaded with effects, the library covers everything from pristine cleans that sound massive in the church, to washed-out fuzz tones, to granular textures soaked in reverb. The resulting collection picks up where Panorama Guitars left off with a host of dreamy post-rock, shoegaze and cinematic guitar sounds.
The Room Sounds
To capture the room tones, a series of microphones were placed along the centre of the church and two stereo mixes were built. Panorama Whitekirk has been designed so the user’s listening position sits directly on a plan of the church in the GUI. Dragging the listener position towards the nave beneath the wooden ceiling changes the sound in real time. Moving it in the opposite direction, towards the chancel in the oldest part of the church, reveals the bigger, more expansive reverb shaped by the centuries-old stonework.
Effects
Panorama Whitekirk also features a collection of effects including a Plate reverb fine-tuned for this library, plus two different atmospheres including a slowly modulated reverb with some granular-like processing, and a shimmery, richly diffused ambience with a huge tail. Furthermore, the massive pedalboard used in the recordings has been captured as a series of effects combinations.
