Best Service has released Totem, a Native American flute library for Engine Player recorded and performed by Eduardo Tarilonte. The collection brings together 12 flutes built from Spanish cedar, aromatic cedar, walnut, ebonized walnut, quilted maple, and bamboo, covering a range of tunings from contrabass to soprano register.
Eleven of the 12 flutes are sourced from Tarilonte’s Forest Kingdom 3 library. The F# Spanish Cedar flute and all 20 Soundscapes were newly recorded for Totem. The flute roster runs from the deep, slow-speaking D Ultrabass Bamboo and A Contrabass Spanish Cedar through midrange instruments including the C Aromatic Cedar, B Walnut, and A Quilted Maple, up to the brighter A High Aromatic Cedar and G Aromatic Cedar. Each instrument was recorded with the natural breath, performance noise, and dynamic range of an acoustic flute preserved in the samples.
The playback instruments are built around Natural and Editable Legato, which handles note transitions with adjustable response. Blow Intensity and Vibrato controls operate in real time, while Finger Hole Sounds and Release Sounds add incidental acoustic detail to the start and end of each note. A second flute can be added as a drone layer, and the speed of ornamental figures is adjustable to suit the tempo and style of a piece. Volume, Pitch, Pan, and Reverb controls provide additional shaping per instrument.
Each of the 12 flutes includes a dedicated Phrases instrument with keyswitch-controlled variations. Performances are recorded at four BPM categories: 75, 85, 110, and 155 BPM. The library also includes 20 atmospheric Soundscapes that layer breathy flute sounds with ambient textures and drones for use as cinematic backgrounds or sound design material.
