23DSP has released Dualite, a multi-effect plugin that runs two independent effect chains and processes either the left and right channels or the mid and side of a stereo signal.
The choice between the two modes determines what each chain carries. In mid/side mode a filter, a compressor or a reverb can be applied to the side channel without altering the centre of the image, or to the centre without altering the sides. In left/right mode the two channels can carry different effects entirely, such as delays set to different times.
Each chain holds up to eight effects in any order, drawn from the 24 included effects and reordered by dragging. Behind each side sits a parallel lane with its own send, mix and output controls, for parallel compression or for a send that leaves the dry path unchanged. A mid/side output trim adjusts width regardless of the mode the chains are running in.
Four modulation slots each provide an LFO, an envelope follower or an ADSR, assignable to any control in either chain with independent depth and polarity. Envelope followers and ADSRs read from a tap point chosen anywhere in either chain. Because the chains are independent, one modulation source can move the two sides in opposite directions. Eight macros are exposed to the host under their own names.
The plugin includes 90 presets across ten categories – Tone Shaping, Character, Dynamics, Space, Movement, Stereo Field, Lo-Fi, Sound Design, Mix Bus and Utility – searchable by instrument and genre, each carrying a description of its intended use.
