Two of UAD’s most established reverb plugins, the EMT 140 Classic Plate Reverberator and the EMT 250 Classic Electronic Reverb, are now available in native format for macOS and Windows, running on CPU without an Apollo audio interface or UAD-2 accelerator.
The plugins have existed as DSP-only titles for close to two decades, restricted to users with qualifying UA hardware. The native release opens access to both to any DAW running VST, AU, or AAX. Current owners of the Apollo DSP versions are eligible for upgrade pricing, available through their UA account.
The EMT 140 models three distinct units from The Plant Studios in Sausalito, California, rather than a single reference instrument. Plates A and B run the original EMT electronics and had not been re-tuned for some time, giving them a denser, slightly darker character. Plate C uses the more modern Martech electronics and was fully serviced at the time of modeling, producing the brightest and most full-frequency response of the three. The plugin retains the original damping controls and system input filters from both the stock EMT 80 Hz and the Martech circuits. Plugin-only controls include a two-band shelving EQ, predelay, width, balance, and modulation.
The EMT 250 traces back to 1976, when it became one of the first commercially available algorithmic digital reverbs. Universal Audio modeled the plugin from a unit at Ocean Way Recording in Los Angeles, using the same algorithm found in the original hardware, and the plugin carries an endorsement from EMT International as the only authorized emulation. Beyond reverb, the 250 is a multi-effects processor: the same algorithm drives delay, phasing, chorus, and echo modes as well. Three controls not present on the original hardware have been added for DAW use: Dry/Wet Mix, Wet Solo, and Hard bypass. The original EMT 250 had no onboard wet/dry control, which required engineers to handle that balance externally at the desk.
Some sounds never go out of style. The EMT 140 and EMT 250 have inspired generations of great recordings, and we’re excited to bring them to even more creators.
