Kensuke Okumura (AudioBrain) has released MixBrain v2.5, a macOS mix assistant plugin system that analyzes the relationship between tracks in a session and suggests corrective and tonal moves. The update separates the system’s two processing modes more clearly and adds a free edition.
MixBrain runs as two plugins working together. MixBrain Node is inserted on individual tracks, and MixBrain Master sits on the master bus. The Master instance reads the Node instances across the session, so the system analyzes how tracks interact rather than processing each one in isolation. That cross-track analysis drives its work on masking, energy balance, tone shaping, mix direction, and overall musical character.
The main change in v2.5 is a sharper division between the two halves of the system. QuickMix now handles practical mix cleanup: masking relief, transient balance, energy control, headroom protection, and the GainBrain Core gain-staging stage. Transform is the separate character engine, changing a track’s tone and direction based on its role in the mix, the genre, the era being targeted, and the results of the analysis. Splitting them gives users a clear line between corrective processing and creative tone shaping.
The two modes are tiered differently across the product line. MixBrain v2.5 ships in four editions organized by Transform Engine depth: FREE with Basic Transform, LITE with Essential Transform, STANDARD with Full Transform, and PRO, which adds an Advanced Transform Recipe Compiler. QuickMix is included in every edition, so the corrective tools are available even at the free tier, while the paid editions unlock progressively deeper Transform modules and more analysis-driven behavior.
The free edition is aimed at users who want to test the Node and Master workflow before committing to a paid tier. Because QuickMix is present across the range, the free version covers the cleanup side of the system, with the paid editions adding the musical character processing on top.
MixBrain targets producers and mix engineers who want an analysis-led second opinion during mixing rather than a single-band corrective tool. The Node and Master structure puts it in the category of assistant plugins that look at a whole session at once, though Okumura’s split between QuickMix cleanup and Transform character shaping is the distinguishing element of this release.
