Serum 2 preset guide
Installing a Serum 2 preset pack is usually a one-minute job—once you know whether you have an importable pack or a normal folder of preset files. This guide shows the cleanest method for both Mac and Windows, how legacy Serum banks fit in, and what to check when a bank refuses to appear.
If your download includes a
.SerumPack file, open Serum 2, use its preset-pack import command, and select that file. If it is a folder of presets, open the preset location from Serum itself, place the vendor folder inside the appropriate Presets folder, then choose Rescan Folders on Disk. Using Serum’s own folder command is safer than guessing a path because your library may have been moved.
Before you install a Serum 2 preset pack
First, extract the downloaded ZIP or RAR archive. Serum cannot read a preset that is still inside a compressed file. Open the extracted folder and look at what the pack actually contains: a single importable file, a folder of presets, or a complete library with presets plus wavetables, noises and samples.
Keep the original folder structure intact until you have read any included installation notes. A complex patch can reference a custom wavetable, noise or sample. Moving only the preset file while leaving its resources behind is a common reason a patch appears in the browser but does not sound as intended.
Which installation method should you use?
| What you downloaded | Best method | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
A .SerumPack file |
Import it from Serum 2 | Use Serum 2’s pack-import command, select the file, then confirm it appears in the browser. |
| A folder containing Serum preset files | Manual folder install | Open the preset folder from Serum, copy the whole vendor folder into Presets, and rescan. |
A legacy Serum 1 bank, often using .fxp |
Keep its folder structure and add it to the preset library | Serum 1 presets are compatible with Serum 2. Rescan after copying. |
| Presets plus Wavetables, Noises or Samples folders | Follow the pack’s folder map | Place each resource type in its matching Serum content folder; do not dump every file into Presets. |
File extensions can be hidden by macOS Finder or Windows File Explorer. If the method is unclear, enable file extensions or open the pack’s readme before moving anything.
Method 1: import a .SerumPack file
This is the simplest option because the pack can preserve its intended internal layout. The exact wording may vary slightly with the Serum 2 build, but the workflow is the same on macOS and Windows.
- Extract the download.Find the file ending in
.SerumPack; do not select the ZIP archive. - Open Serum 2 in your DAW.Load the instrument on a software-instrument or MIDI track.
- Open Serum’s menu.Choose the command for importing a preset pack.
- Select the pack file.Let Serum finish importing before closing the window.
- Check the preset browser.Search for the pack or developer name. If it is not visible, clear active browser filters and rescan the folders on disk.
Method 2: install a Serum 2 preset folder manually
The reliable route is to ask Serum where its content folder is. This works even if you chose a custom library drive, restored from a backup, or use a location that differs from the default.
- Open Serum 2’s menu.Choose Open Serum 2 Presets Folder, or the similarly named command in your installed version.
- Open the Presets subfolder. This is where the browser reads preset banks. Create a clearly named vendor folder if the download does not already include one.
- Copy the whole bank folder.A useful structure is
Presets / Vendor / Pack Name / preset files. Avoid adding several unnecessary wrapper folders. - Place companion resources correctly. If the pack includes Wavetables, Noises or Samples folders, merge their contents into the matching Serum content folders while preserving the pack’s subfolders.
- Return to Serum and rescan.Choose Rescan Folders on Disk. If Serum was already open during the copy, a rescan is essential.
- Test more than one patch.Load a simple bass and a sample-heavy patch to confirm that both presets and referenced resources were found.
The steps are the same on Mac and Windows. The visible filesystem path differs, but you do not need to memorize it: opening the folder from Serum eliminates ambiguity and avoids editing the wrong library.
Can you use Serum 1 presets in Serum 2?
Yes. Xfer states that Serum 1 presets are fully compatible with Serum 2 and should appear in Serum 2’s browser. Serum 2 presets do not load in Serum 1. Also, an existing project that used Serum 1 will not automatically swap its plug-in instance to Serum 2; that separation helps preserve project recall.
If a legacy bank does not appear automatically, use the manual folder method above. Copy the bank into a clearly labelled folder within the Serum 2 preset location, rescan, and test it. Keep Serum 1 installed until important old sessions have been opened and verified—especially if they rely on third-party files.
Serum 2 presets not showing? Check these fixes in order
Most missing-bank problems are caused by a misplaced or over-nested folder, an archive that was never extracted, or a browser that has not refreshed. Work down this list before reinstalling Serum.
If one preset fails but the rest work, the installation is probably correct and that patch may have a missing dependency. If the entire bank is absent, focus on its folder location, nesting and the rescan.
How to organize Serum presets without breaking them
Use short, stable folders based on vendor and pack name. Do not rename or relocate resource folders after presets have been tested; patches can depend on those paths. Tags and favorites are better for mood or genre labels because they do not alter the library structure.
- Keep a master backup of every purchased pack outside the active library.
- Add one pack at a time and test it before importing the next.
- Use consistent vendor names so banks sort together.
- Do not keep duplicate copies in multiple preset folders; duplicates make browser cleanup harder.
- When moving to a new computer, migrate the full content directory—not only the Presets subfolder.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the Serum 2 presets folder?
The safest answer is the location Serum shows you. Open Serum 2’s menu and choose its preset-folder command. That opens the active content directory, including when you use a custom drive or migrated library.
Do Serum presets work on both Mac and Windows?
Preset files are generally cross-platform. The Serum plug-in installation and filesystem location differ, but the sounds themselves can usually move between Mac and Windows when all required wavetables, noises and samples travel with them.
Can Serum 1 presets load in Serum 2?
Yes. Xfer says Serum 1 presets are fully compatible with Serum 2. The reverse is not true: Serum 2 presets cannot be loaded in Serum 1.
Why does a preset appear but sound wrong?
The patch may be missing a custom wavetable, noise or sample, or it may require a newer Serum 2 version. Reinstall the companion resource folders from the original download and check the pack’s requirements.
Do I need to restart my DAW after installing presets?
Usually a folder rescan is enough. If the browser still shows an old index, close and reopen the Serum instance; restart the DAW only after those quicker steps fail.
