A Gross Beat Alternative That Works in Any DAW

Image-Line’s Gross Beat is one of the most loved time-and-volume tools in modern production. Trap producers use it for halftime and gating, phonk producers use it for stutters and scratches, and everyone uses it for those drag-and-drop time patterns that make a beat lurch and breathe. There is just one problem, and it is a big one: Gross Beat only runs inside FL Studio.

If you produce in Ableton, Logic, Cubase, Studio One, Reaper or Bitwig – or you collaborate with people who do – you cannot load Gross Beat at all. This guide covers the best Gross Beat alternative that lives in every DAW, what it does differently, and how to rebuild your favourite Gross Beat moves with it.

SLoOWD - a Gross Beat style time and beat-repeat plugin for any DAW

Why producers love Gross Beat

Gross Beat’s magic is its pattern grid. You store time and volume “maps” – little curves that tell playback to jump back, hold, stutter or gate over one bar – and you trigger them live or automate them. Out of the box it gives you:

  • Halftime and speed changes from time maps,
  • Stutter and repeat patterns,
  • Scratch / rewind style moves,
  • Volume gating and tremolo from the volume maps.

It is fast, it is playable, and once it is in your muscle memory it is hard to give up.

The one dealbreaker: it is FL-only

Gross Beat is a native FL plugin. There is no VST3 or AU build, so:

  • if you switch DAWs, you lose it,
  • if a collaborator is on Logic or Ableton, they cannot open your project’s Gross Beat,
  • if you bounce stems and move to another studio, the effect does not travel.

Gross Beat also focuses on time and volume specifically. It is not a pitch shifter, it has no tape saturation, no bitcrusher and no reverb of its own. Those you add separately.

SLoOWD – time manipulation as a cross-DAW plugin

SLoOWD covers the same creative ground – slow, chop, stutter, freeze – and installs as VST, VST3 and AU on Mac and Windows, so it loads in any modern DAW. Here is how its features map to the Gross Beat moves you already know.

Halftime and slowdown (Gross Beat’s time maps)

SLoOWD’s SLOW DOWN control gives you 1x, 1.5x, 2x and 4x instantly, tempo-locked. That is your halftime and deep-slow drop, without drawing a time map.

Stutter and repeat (Gross Beat’s stutter patterns)

The tempo-synced beat-repeat engine runs 1/16 to 8 bars with an independent Refresh rate for rolls, gates and glitch. A one-click Shuffle randomizer throws out a fresh variation whenever you want a happy accident.

Freeze (Gross Beat’s “hold”)

Gross Beat’s hold moment becomes SLoOWD’s Freeze – lock a slice into an infinite pad or drone and build under it.

Pitch – something Gross Beat barely does

A dedicated Pitch control shifts +/-24 semitones independent of speed, so you can screw a vocal, drop an 808 or re-tune a slowed sample. This is a genuine step past Gross Beat.

A full FX rack – the plugins you used to add after Gross Beat

Tape (drive + wow), filters, saturation, a shaper, a degrade bitcrusher, tempo delay and a reverb with 20 types – the finishing chain, built in.

Rebuilding a Gross Beat move in SLoOWD

The halftime drop. In Gross Beat you would trigger a half-speed time map. In SLoOWD, set SLOW DOWN to 2x and automate WET (or bypass) so it snaps in on the drop.

The stutter fill. Instead of a stutter pattern, set Loop to 1/16, shorten Refresh for a machine-gun roll, and automate it across the last beat of the bar.

The held/frozen moment. Where you would use hold, engage Freeze on a sustained note and roll off the highs with the filter for a pad.

The screwed flip. Gross Beat cannot really do this – in SLoOWD, 2x slowdown plus a few semitones of Pitch down plus Tape Wow gets you a full chopped-and-screwed texture.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Gross Beat VST for Ableton or Logic? No – Gross Beat is FL-native only. SLoOWD is the cross-DAW alternative, available as VST, VST3 and AU.

Can SLoOWD do everything Gross Beat does? It covers the halftime, stutter and hold territory, and adds pitch, tape and reverb. Gross Beat’s exact drag-and-drop time-map interface is unique to it; SLoOWD gets you the same results with knobs and automation.

Will it open in FL Studio too? Yes – VST3 loads in FL just like any other plugin, so you are not locked out either way.

Is it beginner friendly? Yes. The controls are labelled and immediate – no map-drawing required – and the eight preset categories are a fast starting point.

The verdict

If you live entirely inside FL Studio, Gross Beat is still excellent and there is no reason to switch. But the moment you need those halftime, stutter and hold moves in any other DAW – or you want pitch, tape and reverb in the same plugin – SLoOWD is the portable Gross Beat alternative that follows you wherever you produce.
