Attila M. Magyar releases free JS80P v4.0.0 for Windows, Linux, and macOS (VST2 & VST3)

Attila M. Magyar has announced the release of version 4.0.0 of JS80P, a MIDI-driven, performance-oriented, free and open source synthesizer VST plugin for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

Version 4.0.0 is almost fully backward-compatible with previous versions, so most existing patches and projects can be loaded without any changes. The only exceptions are projects where the waveform parameter of an audio oscillator or an LFO has a MIDI controller, a macro, or any kind of automation assigned to it – these might need adjustments in order to account for the new waveforms introduced in this version.

Changes:

  • JS80P now runs on macOS as well.
  • New oscillator and LFO waveforms with pulse width modulation (PWM): pulse, soft pulse, bipolar pulse, and soft bipolar pulse.
  • New distortion types, including sin(x), sqrt(x), etc.
  • New presets: 16 Beats Riser, Ambient Pluck, Chiptune, Octave Bass, and Tremolo PWM Bass.
  • The user interface is now resizable. (This should also fix various font sizing problems on high-resolution displays.).
  • Old presets with misleading names were renamed.
  • Improved VST 3 event processing order consistency.
  • Bugfix: logarithmic scale parameters were not saved correctly if their value was not modified after switching to logarithmic scale. This is now fixed.
  • Bugfix: the plugin will handle out-of-range parameter values sent by certain DAWs more gracefully.
  • Bugfix: in certain cases, the noise generator of the oscillators could turn on slightly ahead of Note On events. Now it’s made sure that noise generators won’t make any sound before they are supposed to.
  • Bugfix: VST 3 bundles now use the correct structure.

JS80P comes with two oscillators (and a sub-harmonic sine), multiple filters, effects, envelopes, LFOs, and macros to shape the sound with subtractive, additive, PWM, FM, PM, and AM synthesis, complete with polyphonic, monophonic, and split keyboard modes.
