Akai Professional has announced the release of the MPC XL, a new flagship standalone music production center running on the MPC3 operating system. This release introduces a significant hardware update to the MPC line, featuring a new Gen 2 processor, expanded memory, and 3D-sensing pad technology.
The MPC XL is built around a Gen 2 8-core processor, which Akai states delivers four times the processing power of previous MPC models. It is equipped with 16GB of RAM, double the memory found in the MPC Live III, allowing for increased plugin count and sample management. The unit ships with a 256GB internal NVMe SSD and includes a SATA expansion bay for additional storage.
MPCe Pads and Control Interface
A primary feature of the MPC XL is the inclusion of “MPCe” pads with 3D-sensing technology. Each pad is divided into four quadrants, allowing users to morph, layer, and control sound parameters based on finger placement and movement, extending control beyond standard velocity and pressure sensitivity.
The hardware interface features a 10.1-inch HD multi-gesture touchscreen with an adjustable tilt mechanism. For tactile parameter control, the unit includes 16 Q-Link knobs, each paired with an OLED display for real-time visual feedback. A new “XL Channel Command” section provides a dedicated encoder and OLED display for immediate access to mixing and recording parameters. The layout also incorporates a dedicated step sequencer with 16 RGB function buttons and an assignable performance touch strip.
Connectivity and Software
Designed as a central hub for studio environments, the MPC XL offers extensive I/O options. The rear panel houses two XLR/TRS combo inputs with mic preamps and phantom power, two dedicated instrument inputs, and two RCA phono inputs for turntable connection.
Output capabilities include eight separate line outputs and 16 CV/Gate outputs (via eight stereo jacks), enabling integration with modular systems. The unit also features four 5-pin MIDI outputs and two MIDI inputs. USB-C connectivity supports up to 24 channels of audio I/O and 32 channels of MIDI I/O.
The MPC XL runs on MPC3 OS, supporting up to 32 plugin instruments, 16 audio tracks, and 256 simultaneous voices. It includes production-ready content such as the Native Instruments MPC Edition Play Series and the Lone Forest Expansion.
