Universal Audio releases UAD Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive Special Amp – Native D-Style Plugin

Universal Audio has announced the release of the UAD Enigmatic ’82 Overdrive Special Amp, a native plugin designed to emulate the circuit behaviors of various “D-style” boutique amplifiers. Built using component-level circuit analysis, the plugin provides access to several iterations of these rare amplifiers produced over four decades, ranging from early Santa Cruz builds to later Los Angeles studio configurations.

The plugin features three distinct voicing modes—Rock, Jazz, and Custom—allowing users to navigate the specific gain structures and frequency responses associated with different eras of the original hardware. Unlike static emulations, Enigmatic ’82 provides deep circuit-level customization, enabling users to swap power sections, modify tone stacks, and engage the “Hot Rubber Monkey” (HRM) internal EQ modification.

Key Features:

  • Era-Specific Modeling: Covers four decades of boutique ODS-style circuits, from clean high-headroom tones to harmonically rich overdrive.

  • Circuit Customization: Mix and match power amp sections and tone stacks; includes the optional HRM overdrive EQ mod.

  • Cabinet and Mic Emulations: Nine curated speaker cabinet and microphone combinations based on Universal Audio’s dynamic speaker modeling.

  • Artist Presets: Includes over 40 configurations from professional guitarists including Joey Landreth, Megan Lovell, and Daniel Donato.

  • Native Compatibility: Runs on Mac and PC without the requirement of Apollo or UAD-2 hardware.
