quietformat has released TOYKEY, a sample-based virtual instrument for macOS and Windows built from a vintage 1980s toy keyboard.
TOYKEY keeps the raw charm, playful tone, and distinctive character of the original instrument while expanding it with modern sound-shaping features for music production.
It includes four core voice layers: Organ, String, Clarinet, and Piano. Each layer has independent volume and pan control, allowing users to blend tones freely and build more layered sounds.
The instrument also includes filter and envelope controls, built-in Chorus, Delay, and Reverb, plus Unison, Mono, and Portamento for additional sound shaping.
TOYKEY supports Pitch MPE, allowing pitch to be controlled independently per note. Used in an MPE-capable environment such as Ableton Live or with a compatible controller, it allows more expressive vibrato, bends, and pitch movement even in polyphonic playing.
