Toontrack has announced the release of Vintage Vibes EKX, a new expansion for its EZkeys 2 virtual instrument platform. This library centers around the sound of a classic Wurlitzer electric piano from the 1970s, making it the eleventh EKX to arrive for the updated expansion format since EZkeys 2 launched in May 2023.
Capturing the Timeless “Wurly” Sound
The expansion is built upon a carefully preserved and restored Wurlitzer electric piano from the mid-1970s. This instrument is famed for its unique character—the “clank of the hammers, the buzz of the reeds,” and those slight, organic inconsistencies that give it a living, breathing sound. This particular type of electric piano, often nicknamed the “Wurly,” has been a defining sound in genres like funk, jazz, soul, blues, and rock since its introduction in the 1950s.
To capture its versatile tone, the instrument was sampled in two distinct ways, giving users a contrast of sounds right out of the box:

The included presets take advantage of both tones, blending and saturating them with a variety of effects. You’ll find everything from the instrument’s own tremolo to modern effects like chorus, distortion, reverb, and modeled amplifiers. Some presets even subtly weave in layers of synthesized sounds—such as brass, bells, and atmospheres—to add extra dimension and color. Users can expect a wide tonal palette, ranging from a dry, close-up recording to “warm to smoky, raw, greasy and gritty.”
