Dreamtonics has released Instrument X, an instrument platform built on neural acoustic modeling rather than sample-based playback. The engine translates notation directly into simulated sound-wave radiation, aiming to give composers, film scorers, and producers continuous control over bow, breath, and key articulation instead of triggering static recorded loops.
The product is the third entry in Dreamtonics’ lineup alongside Synthesizer V and Vocoflex, both vocal synthesis tools. Rather than folding instrument synthesis into an existing workspace, the company built Instrument X as a separate platform, though it shares interface conventions with Synthesizer V and integrates with it and Vocoflex as plugins inside a DAW.
Instrument X outputs up to 11 concurrent microphone feeds spanning close spot mics, a Decca tree array, and room ambience pairs, mixed through a dedicated Microphone Mixer Panel. Maintaining phase and structural coherency across that many channels is a known difficulty for neural audio synthesis. Dreamtonics addresses it with a patent-pending method: a dodecahedral speaker array measures a studio’s acoustic geometry, and the resulting physics-augmented neural networks are trained to separate a room’s directional acoustics from the dry instrument source. The engine runs locally on a standard laptop and requires neither an internet connection nor a dedicated GPU.
The Unified Articulation Editor combines automated “Smart Articulation” with per-note manual control, and lets users stack techniques such as col legno or muted brass configurations on a single note. The Dynamics Lane maps context-appropriate dynamics automatically based on pitch, duration, and phrasing, with a manual override lane; adjusting the curve changes the underlying timbre, harmonic saturation, and kinetic response of the modeled instrument rather than just output gain. AI Performance Retakes regenerates alternate performances for a selected phrase, either as a full re-roll or targeted at a specific parameter such as timbre drift, micro-pitch curve, or kinetic intensity. Overlapping notes render as independent voices rather than cutting each other off, a feature Dreamtonics calls Advanced Polyphony.
The launch lineup covers 15 instrument expansions across three named collections. The Orchestral Strings Collection includes Violin 1, Viola 1, Violoncello 1, and Contrabass 1, with legato bowing, trills, tremolos, portamentos, harmonics, pizzicato, col legno, sul ponticello, sul tasto, and modeled con sordino muting. The Orchestral Woodwinds Collection includes Flute 1, Piccolo 1, Oboe 1, Clarinet in A 1, and Bassoon 1, with breath dynamics, register transitions, and instrument-specific techniques including native flute harmonics and clarinet and bassoon falls. The Orchestral Brass Collection includes Trumpet 1, Trombone 1, Horn 1, and Tuba 1, with breath tracking, trombone portamento glides, horn stopped notes, and modeled straight, cup, and harmon mutes on trumpet and trombone. Five global performance presets, Adagio, Allegro, con Fuoco, Pop, and Ballade, adjust the emotional character of an arrangement from a single control.
