Ambient music is easy to make badly and brutally hard to make well, which is why most instruments aimed at the genre end up as reverb vomitoriums. The Sonicware Ambient Ø is a $279 plastic box that actually understands the assignment: four independently sequenced layers, an engine built specifically to keep tones from ever settling, and seven tuning systems that matter enormously once your notes start lasting forty seconds. Then you look at the front panel and realize Sonicware spent all its brilliance on the sound and almost none of it informing you what the machine is doing, which is either a dealbreaker or the price of admission depending on how badly you want what’s inside…
