AAFTools has released AAF Bridge, a macOS utility that converts video editors’ timelines into native Ableton Live projects — and finished Live Sets back into editor formats. The best way to import and export AAF to Ableton Live.
On the way in, an AAF (DaVinci Resolve, Pro Tools, Media Composer, Premiere Pro, Nuenod, etc), XML, FCPXML or FCPXMLD file becomes a regular Live project: clips placed sample-accurately, named tracks, fades and crossfades, clip gain, volume and pan automation, markers, track and clip colors, and the picture cut on its own muted video track for working to image. MXF-wrapped audio converts to WAV automatically.
On the way out, a Ableton Live Set exports to AAF, Premiere XML, FCPXML or FCPXMLD — with real crossfade transitions, a timecode track, and optionally all media collected into one turnover folder.
AAF Bridge is currently the only Ableton Live converter that also covers the XML and FCPXML / FCPXMLD routes, and it converts in both directions. Crossfades get particular attention: every blend maps to the target’s native construct — Live’s own crossfade encoding on import, real AAF dissolves on export — at full blend length, with no level dip. The developer is equally direct about the format’s limits: AAF carries no MIDI and no plugins, time-stretched clips are flagged for consolidation rather than silently rendered, and every conversion writes a plain-text report of what transferred and what could not. AAF Bridge is available now for macOS and Windows.
