Carve Audio has just announced the release of the Gas Can Amp, a guitar amp plugin inspired by the rare amplifier known as “The Can.” The small battery-powered amp became famous for its gritty, buzzing tone on the first Foo Fighters record and has remained one of the more mysterious pieces of gear associated with that sound.
Gas Can Amp recreates the raw character of the original amplifier while expanding its tone-shaping capabilities so musicians can easily dial in sounds that work in modern productions.
The Story Behind “The Can”
Originally built by SLM Electronics in the 1980s, “The Can” was a small battery-powered amplifier housed in a plastic gas-can-style enclosure. Its unusual design and aggressive buzzing tone made it stand out from traditional guitar amps.
The amp gained attention after it was used during the recording of the first Foo Fighters record, where its gritty distortion helped shape the sound of the album’s guitars.
Because relatively few units were made and they rarely appear on the used market, the original amplifier has become extremely difficult to find. When one does surface, prices have climbed as musicians and collectors chase its distinctive sound.
Bringing a Rare Sound Into the DAW
Gas Can Amp was created to make that distinctive tone accessible inside modern recording environments.
Rather than simply copying the circuit, Carve Audio preserved the recognizable character of the original amp while expanding its controls so the tone can be shaped more easily in a modern mix.
The result is a plugin that captures the raw personality of the original amplifier while offering the flexibility today’s productions demand.
Gas Can Amp works well on guitars, vocals, drums, and keys, adding overdriven bite, fizzy texture, and unpredictable character that helps tracks stand out.
It’s actually really quite close to the original. Playing it, the character is all there.
