New plugin offers fully synthesised drum sounds with detailed control and analogue-inspired features.
Baby Audio has launched Tekno, a drum synthesiser plugin that combines analogue-style circuit modelling with modern digital synthesis. The plugin offers 18 drum engines, each fully synthesised without relying on pre-recorded samples, and is available now for an introductory price of $79 (regular MSRP $129).
Circuit-modelled synthesis and customisable drum design
Tekno is designed as an alternative to traditional sample-based drum production, positioning itself as a future-facing tool that builds on the legacy of iconic drum machines. While not emulating any specific vintage hardware, the plugin uses modelled circuit behaviour and non-linear dynamics to produce what Baby Audio describes as evolving, humanised drum sounds.
The plugin’s 18 drum engines are built to mimic the sonic depth and flexibility of analogue hardware while offering the workflow advantages of modern digital tools. Users can shape each drum hit through a range of synthesis parameters, with access to individual circuit components for more advanced sound design.
One notable feature is Tekno’s use of modelled analogue non-linearities, which aim to introduce subtle variations in each drum hit. A Humanize function adds further variation, helping to avoid the mechanical feel often associated with sample-based drums.
Baby Audio has also included a smart preset randomizer, allowing users to generate new drum sounds and kits quickly. This system has been updated from previous Baby Audio plugins and is designed to explore new sonic territory efficiently.
Artist kits and collaborative effects
Tekno includes 73 preset drum kits created by a range of electronic music producers such as Richard Devine, Virtual Riot, Mr. Bill, and Yoad Nevo. These kits showcase the plugin’s flexibility across genres, from experimental electronic to more mainstream production styles.
The plugin also incorporates built-in effects developed in collaboration with audio DSP engineer Jatin Chowdhury. These effects are integrated into the workflow, aiming to offer additional sound-shaping capabilities without needing external plugins.
Tekno supports all major DAWs on both Mac and Windows platforms, including native compatibility with Apple Silicon devices. It is available now through Baby Audio’s website.
